Sparkling Wine

Although the term "champagne" can only refer to wines bottled in Frances similarly titled wine region, sparkling wines can be a luxurious delight no matter where theyre from. The twice-fermented white wine is given its signature bubbly sparkle due to the sugar included in the secondary fermentation process. This wine can range in sweetness depending on the manufacturers desires.

It is commonly believed that the bubbles found in sparkling wine can result in imbibers becoming intoxicated at a quicker rate than those who drink a similar amount of regular wine with the same alcohol content. Long considered a mainstay of any celebration, it is a common sight to see sparkling wine corks popping at birthdays, weddings, and holidays such as New Years Eve.

A number of the sparkling wines produced in Australia are produced from the same strain of grapes used in the Champagne region of France. However, due to the differences in weather and atmosphere the grapes used in Australia have a significantly different taste when compared to their French counterparts. For instance, the Petit meslier produced in Australia is used to create a unique, acidic sparkling white wine.

Another unique sparkling wine to Australia is the Cynge blanc, grown in the wineries of the western portion of the country. The fruit used to make this wine results in an uncommonly tasty wine which is slowly spreading in popularity.

Other local options include some unique "sparkling red wines." Like regular sparkling wine, sugar is added to red wine and fermented again to produce carbon dioxide which results in the signature bubbles of any sparkling wine. Although less traditional, sparkling reds are a unique and exciting change of pace for those who might be interested in trying something a little bit off the beaten path.

Regardless of the variety of you choose, Australias local vineyards are churning out some of the highest quality sparkling wines this side of France.
