Chardonnay

Chardonnay is an immensely popular dry white wine that is made from the Chardonnay grape. This unique and versatile grape is renowned for its adaptability to diverse climates and is grown in many parts of the world, including Australia, France, South Africa, and the United States.

Chardonnay grapes are relatively easy to grow and prolific in their yields. Chardonnay wines are thus inexpensive to produce, which exposes their many flavor selections to a broad cross-section of people. Chardonnay wines are not limited to the affluent. They are at once readily available and reasonably priced.

There is some dispute as to the grape’s origins, with vineyard owners in Lebanon and Syria citing the Middle East as Chardonnay’s rightful birthplace. However, the consensus opinion is that the grapes are progeny of the Pinot vine and originated in Burgundy, France.

Notwithstanding the ancestry debate, Chardonnay wines are currently recognized the world over for their range of flavors, including fruity versions of apple, tangerine, lemon, and melon. Other Chardonnay wines feature stronger buttery-oak overtones. Chardonnay wines are renowned for stimulating the palates of both wine connoisseurs and ordinary folks enjoying a glass of wine with dinner.

While Chardonnay wines harmonize with a variety of foods, a good Chardonnay is frequently recommended with pork, poultry, and seafood like lobster, scallops, and shrimp. Chardonnay wines are often ordered with dishes prepared with garlic or curry. These remarkably smooth white wines also enhance foods cooked in butter and heavy cream sauces. Even simple salads go well with the wine. Cheeses that complement Chardonnays include Gruyere, Provolone, and Brie.

Since the grapes are grown in such varied climates and soils, Chardonnay wines run a wide gamut of taste from semi-sweet to sour. The wines can be heady or light. Chardonnay grapes are also used in sparkling wines and champagnes. It’s truly amazing what this one grape has wrought.
