Viognier Wine

The term Viognier means a rare type of grape said to be discovered by the Greeks over 2,000 years ago. 20 years ago it was planted in California in Rhone Valley. Because the Viognier grape is difficult to grow there are only a few vineyards that produce Viognier wine today. Viognier wine is young and still considered rare unique and somewhat exotic. Because the vineyards are so difficult to find maintain and grow the supply market is still considered to be small for this type of wine. There are about 20 wineries growing Viognier in the traditional wine growing regions of California with a few others spread across 13 of the United States.

Most of the time you hear that wine gets better with age. Viognier wine is quite the opposite. The normal aging process that causes most wines to become richer tasting lessens the strength of the taste and smell of Viognier wine. The Viognier wine is noted for its citrus and fruity flavors with hints of spice and vibrant floral. This unique mix of perfume and fruity flavors it is as enticing to smell as it is to taste. Viognier is often compared to Chardonnay but it is tastier and fruitier than many white wines on the market today. Those who have had the opportunity to taste the wine are pleasantly surprised by the rich lasting flavor.

Viognier wine is best served within two years of its bottle date and should be enjoyed just a bit cooler than room temperature. The coolness allows the natural flavors of the wine to come to life. As with many table wines specific foods are complimented by the unique taste of Viognier wine. Mediterranean cuisine, spicy dishes and poultry are thought to be an excellent complement to the sweet dry flavor of Viognier. The wine because of its strong yet subtle taste does not need a compliment. This wine is just as delicious when it is being sipped and enjoyed all by itself.
